Communal harmony case: Yudhveer Singh Bains arrested over alleged Facebook video post

Police said businessman Yudhveer Singh Bains was arrested after a complaint alleged he shared a Facebook video that could promote hostility between religious communities. Officers said the clip included remarks aimed at a particular community and offensive language, raising law-and-order concerns. Police also cited preliminary findings that similar social media content was posted regularly.

Police said businessman Yudhveer Singh Bains was arrested on Friday over a Facebook video. Officials said the content could disturb communal harmony. Bains is also the main accused in the Rs 20 crore Kangra Cooperative Bank loan scam. Police linked the arrest to a complaint about online remarks and language.

A police spokesperson said a complaint reached Boileauganj police station about Bains’s video. The complainant alleged the post could fuel hostility between religious communities. The spokesperson said the clip had remarks aimed at a particular community. The complaint also cited the use of offensive language in the video.

Police said wider sharing of the video could affect law and order. The spokesperson said officials checked available videos and other digital material. The initial review found the posts could create tension between communities. Police also said Bains had been posting similar material regularly on social platforms.

Based on the complaint and early findings, police registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 196, 299 and 3532. The spokesperson said Bains was later served a notice. Police directed Bains to join the enquiry. The spokesperson said Bains did not cooperate with investigators.

Police said Bains also tried to obstruct the investigation. The spokesperson said this led to the addition of Section 221. The case now covers both the social media allegations and the alleged obstruction. Police said the evidence reviewed so far supported these steps at this stage.

Bains had earlier made allegations against the police. Bains said police were trying to abduct Bains on the directions of some people in top positions. Bains also alleged police acted because Bains filed a complaint with the Enforcement Directorate. Bains said the complaint was against Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

The spokesperson said the arrest followed the complaint and review of digital evidence. Police said the investigation will continue under the listed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections. Officials said the focus remained on preventing communal tension and protecting public order. Police also linked the case to Bains’s refusal to join the enquiry and the obstruction allegation.
