YSRCP MLA Raises Concerns Over CAA, Demands Changes

A YSRCP MLA expressed strong opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in its current form and called for amendments to address the concerns of the Muslim community. Kurnool MLA Abdul Hafeez Khan held a press conference at the YSRCP office in Tadepalli, Guntur district, to voice his objections to the law.

Impact on the Muslim Community

Khan emphasized that implementing the CAA without amendments would adversely affect the Muslim community. He pointed out that the law is linked to the National Register for Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR). If an Indian Muslim is unable to prove their citizenship during NRC or NPR, the CAA will not apply to them. However, individuals from other religions facing a similar situation would receive protection under the CAA.

Concerns and Distress

According to Khan, there is significant distress within the Muslim community due to fears of being targeted through NRC or NPR. He highlighted that the CAA, in its current form, fails to provide adequate protection for Indian Muslims. Consequently, he urged the central government to amend the law and address the legitimate concerns of the Muslim community.

Notification of CAA Rules

The central government recently notified the rules for implementing the CAA, enabling the granting of citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

The YSRCP MLA's demand for amendments to the CAA reflects the ongoing concerns and objections within the Muslim community. The central government's decision to notify the rules for implementing the law has further intensified the debate surrounding the CAA and its potential impact on various religious groups in India.
