Tranquilised Young Elephant in Kannur District Dies Due to Severe Injuries

A three-year-old elephant, which had wandered into Ayyankunnu grama panchayat in Kannur district, was tranquilised by forest officials on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the animal died later that evening. The exact cause of death remains unclear, but officials suspect its weak condition and a severe jaw injury contributed to its demise.

Young Elephant in Kannur District Dies

The elephant's jaw injury, believed to be caused by a firecracker, prevented it from eating or drinking. After sedation, forest officials applied medication to its wounds. "The chief wildlife warden directed that the elephant be tranquilised and taken away from the populated area for treatment," officials stated.

Forest Officials' Actions

Following the directive, the elephant was transported to the Aralam Valyamchal RRT treatment centre. If necessary, it was to be moved to Wayanad for specialised care. However, it passed away before any further treatment could be administered. Visuals on television showed the animal being tied with ropes and loaded onto a vehicle.

The incident occurred early on Wednesday morning, prompting immediate action from local authorities. The district collector issued an order restricting public gatherings in three wards of Ayyankunnu grama panchayat for two days. This order aimed to ensure safety and facilitate the capture of the elephant.

Public Response and Safety Measures

Despite the restrictions, many people gathered in the area throughout the day to observe the efforts of forest officials. The order prohibited gatherings in wards 8, 9, and 10 from 10 am on March 5 to 6 pm on March 6. However, public curiosity led to large crowds forming at the scene.

This incident follows a tragic event on February 23 when an elderly couple was killed by an elephant in the Aralam Farms area. Such occurrences highlight ongoing challenges in managing human-wildlife interactions in the region.

The unfortunate death of this young elephant underscores the complexities involved in wildlife management and conservation efforts. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident to prevent future occurrences.
