Year Ender 2024: Notable Indian Politicians Who Passed Away This Year
The year 2024 was marked by significant losses in the Indian political landscape, with the passing of several veteran leaders across various parties. Among these, the demise of Baba Siddique was particularly shocking. The four-time Congress MLA, who later aligned with the NCP, met a tragic end on 12 October 2024. Siddique was fatally shot in Mumbai, an attack orchestrated by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, leaving a void in Maharashtra's political scene.
Another profound loss was that of Sitaram Yechury, a stalwart of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Yechury, who had been a Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal and served as the General Secretary of his party, passed away on 12 September 2024 at the age of 72. His tenure in politics, which included being a member of the CPI(M)'s Politburo since 1992, was marked by his advocacy for leftist policies and his significant contributions to the political discourse in India.

In Bihar, the political sphere felt the loss of Sushil Kumar Modi, a senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister. Modi, who played a key role in Bihar's governance from 2005 to 2020, succumbed to cancer on 13 May 2024, at the age of 72. His departure was a blow to the BJP and the state's political framework, where he had been a pivotal figure for several years.
The Congress party too faced a notable bereavement with the passing of Natwar Singh on 10 August 2024. Singh, who had a distinguished career as an Indian Foreign Service officer before venturing into politics, served as the External Affairs Minister in the first UPA government. His experiences as a diplomat and politician enriched the Indian political scene significantly over the decades.
The Telangana statehood movement lost one of its prominent leaders, Jitta Balakrishna Reddy, on 6 September 2024. At the age of 52, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and former TRS youth activist’s contribution to the cause of Telangana's statehood was invaluable. Reddy's untimely demise was a setback for his party and the movement he championed.
These losses in 2024 underline the transient nature of political leadership and the voids that such departures create. Each leader, with their distinct contributions and ideologies, played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of their respective regions and the country at large. Their legacies, marked by their dedication and service, continue to inspire future generations in Indian politics.
