Yakub Memon hanged: Digvijay Singh, Shashi Tharoor, Manishankar Aiyar embarrass Congress

New Delhi, July 27: Twenty-two years after Mumbai was rocked by a series of loud explosions, one of the key conspirators, Yakub Memon was sent to gallows on Thursday, July 30 at 6.30 am in Nagpur Central jail.

After his hanging, many politicians gave their reactions to media and some tweeted their views.

Congress party faced an embarrassment from three of it top leaders: Digvijay Singh, Shashi Tharoor, Mani Shankar Aiyar.

Digvijay Singh, the Congress General Secretary, came in the eye of storm with his tweet, in which he compared Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's funeral with Yakub Memon's execution.

He tweeted, "What a coincidence ! Funerals of Two Indian MuslIms on the same day. Dr Kalam who has made every Indian proud of his achievements for India". [After Yakub's hanging, Digvijay Singh says show same 'urgency' in other terror cases]

Congress party's another senior leader Shashi Tharoor embroiled into controversy by tweeting, "Saddened by news that our government has hanged a human being. State-sponsored killing diminishes us all by reducing us to murderers too."

He further tweeted, "There is no evidence that death penalty serves as a deterrent: to the contrary in fact. All it does is exact retribution: unworthy of a Govt. We must fight against terrorism w/all the means at our command. But cold-blooded execution has never prevented a terror attack anywhere."

Another senior Congress leader Manishankar Aiyar condemned Yakub's hanging and said,"Which terrorist will get deterred by death penalties? We as a democratic and civilized nation must abolish this punishment?
