Yaarana Jaari Rahega!’: Foreign Secretary’s Witty Response Highlights India-Maldives Friendship
In a light-hearted yet significant exchange, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed the media on the evolving relationship between India and the Maldives following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
This meeting marks a pivotal moment in the two nations' diplomatic ties, particularly given Muizzu's reputation as a leader with pro-China leanings.

During the press briefing, a journalist posed a question reflecting on the sudden improvement in relations, asking, "Maldives ke saath dooriyan nazdeekiyan mein badal gayi, yeh kya ittefaq hai?" (The distances with the Maldives have turned into closeness; is this a coincidence?). Misri cleverly responded in Hindi, playfully incorporating Bollywood references into his reply: "Dooriyan, nazdeekiyan, ittefaq... I don't think you could add more Bollywood film names in one question. But I would say, 'Yaarana jaari rahega'," indicating that the friendship between the two nations would continue.

Maldives President's Diplomatic Shift
Earlier today, President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties with India, referring to it as a "valued partner and friend." He emphasized that Maldives' cooperation with India will always remain a priority, assuring that the country would not take any actions that could compromise India's security. "While we enhance cooperation with other countries in various sectors, we remain committed to ensuring our actions do not compromise the security and stability of our region," he stated.
A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations
This meeting comes on the heels of a months-long diplomatic standoff between the two nations, which many are calling a "diplomatic U-turn." Prime Minister Modi and President Muizzu announced plans for future collaboration on various projects, signalling a fresh start in their partnership.
Muizzu, who arrived in India on a five-day visit, received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier in the day. During the bilateral talks, the two leaders also finalized a currency swap agreement worth USD 400 million, aimed at helping the Maldives address its foreign exchange reserve challenges.
Looking Ahead
The recent developments signify a renewed commitment to partnership between India and the Maldives, reflecting the complexities of regional geopolitics. As both nations navigate their diplomatic paths, the tone set by leaders during this meeting suggests a positive trajectory for future collaboration.
