Women's Day 2024: Mamata Banerjee Says West Bengal Is Safest State For Women

Amidst the Sandeshkhali row, where several women alleged that they were molested and sexually harassed by Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said her state is the safest place for women in the country. Addressing a public gathering in Kolakata themed 'Mahila Der Adhikaar, Aamader Angikaar' (women's rights are our commitment) after taking out a march from College Street to Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said "BJP leaders are spreading canards about Sandeshkhali but silent over atrocities on women in states ruled by their party."

During the march, women workers and supporters of her party were walking behind the West Bengal Chief Minister to show solidarity with the state ruling party. Coincidentally, Mamata Banerjee's show of women's power came on the eve of International Women's Day.

Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the BJP saying "Yesterday, their leaders said women are tortured in Bengal. I can challenge that women are the safest in Bengal."

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was also caught by camera walking alongside Trinamool Chief.

Everyone was stunned after noticing BJP's Ranaghat Dakshin MLA Mukut Mani Adhikari walking alongside TMC's Abhishek Banerjee, indicating that TMC is likely to poach saffron leaders of state ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Earlier, after the Kolkata High Court's intervention, West Bengal police handed over Sheikh Shahjahan to the CBI. Shahjahan was named as the main accused and mastermind behind the attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team when they reached Sandeshkhali to raid his house in connection with extortion and unaccounted money cases.
