Investigation Underway After Woman's Death and Four Critical Cases Post-Delivery at Bengal Hospital
A tragic incident at a state-run hospital in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district has led to the death of a woman and left four others in critical condition. This occurred after the administration of allegedly expired intravenous fluid during childbirth, prompting an investigation by the health department. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also oversees the health portfolio, has decided to personally review the probe report, according to a reliable source.

The family of the deceased woman claimed that her death at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital was due to expired Ringer's Lactate being administered intravenously. Ringer's Lactate is typically used to replenish water and electrolytes in patients with low blood volume or pressure. Following this incident, the health department halted the use of 10 medicines, including the IV fluid from one manufacturer, across all state-run hospitals until test results are available.
Investigation and Response
A 13-member panel has been established by the state government to investigate the matter thoroughly. The family of the deceased lodged a police complaint, accusing hospital authorities of negligence leading to her death. A senior official confirmed that complaints were received from both the husband of the deceased and relatives of four other affected patients.
Samples of the Ringer's Lactate have been collected for analysis, with a report from drug control authorities pending. "Once we get the report, the matter will be clear," an official stated. Meanwhile, the baby delivered by the deceased woman remains admitted at MMCH.
Public Outcry and Political Reactions
The incident sparked protests by Left party and Congress workers outside the hospital. Protesters attempted to enter the facility to meet with the investigation team but were stopped by police. They displayed posters and chanted slogans against the state government, holding it accountable for what they termed as negligence by hospital authorities.
The health department's committee members visited the hospital on Saturday for discussions with relevant authorities. The state secretariat has urged for a swift submission of findings from this investigation. The outcome is awaited as it will determine further actions regarding hospital protocols and responsibilities in such critical situations.
