At a time when crime against women is steadily on the rise, a woman has been arrested in Kolkata in connection with the death of her husband who was a Joint Commissioner of Commercial Tax, Directorate of Commercial Tax, West Bengal.
52-year-old Sukriti Kumar Roy was found dead in the prayer room of his residence located on Ramakrishna Sarani in Garia, Kolkata.
Relatives and neighbours had forced open the locked door of the prayer room located on the terrace of his residence to find him dead on Wednesday night. He was found seated on a stool with his neck tied to the window grille.
Recently Roy had been released from a hospital where he had been admitted for having consumed an overdose of sleeping pills.
Roy's wife Chandana had been arrested in connection with his death. Charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including Abetment have been slapped on her.
"We have arrested the wife of the deceased as there is a mismatch between her statements and circumstantial evidences. Prima facie it looks like a death from hanging. However we have to wait for the post mortem report to confirm the cause of death" stated Saikat Ghosh, Additional Superintendent of Police, Baruipur.
Chandana claims that her husband was mentally depressed and he feared that his brothers were trying to take away his property.
She stated that on Wednesday she had gone to school to collect her son. Roy was at home. On returning she did not see Roy around. After finding the door of the prayer room locked, she had called up Roy's family. They arrived, broke open the door to find him dead.
Subodh Roy, father of the deceased claimed that Chandana had called him up on Wednesday evening and had enquired about her husband's whereabouts. She even claimed that her husband was in Subodh Roy's home.
Sensing trouble, the Roy's had rushed to Sukriti's house. Along with neighbours, they had forced open the door to find him dead. They had then informed the police.
Roy's family claim that Chandana used to mentally and physically torture him. Prittish Roy, Sukriti's brother alleged that Chandana was not of sound moral character and hinted at multiple extramarital affairs that Chandana was allegedly involved in.
"She killed my brother and then staged a suicide. It is all for his property" alleged Kajal Roy, the brother.
Kajal further alleged that after Sukriti had remarried in 2005, his new wife Chandana had made it clear that she did not approve of Sukriti's father and brothers staying with them.
"Since then we have been living separately. It has been more than 10 years that we have visited this house" added Kajal Roy. Neighbours have complained of frequent quarrels between Chandana and her husband.
