Will Nishant Kumar Carry Forward Nitish Kumar’s Political Legacy in Bihar?

As Bihar Election 2025 results pour in, attention has turned not only to political leaders but also to Nitish Kumar's only son, Nishant Kumar. While the NDA leads in several constituencies, Nishant remains firmly away from the political spotlight.

Unlike his father, who has been a dominant figure in Bihar politics for over three decades, Nishant has chosen a low-profile life focused on his professional career. An engineering graduate, he holds a degree in software engineering from the renowned BIT College in Ranchi. Known for maintaining a small social circle, Nishant rarely appears at public events or party functions.

Despite occasional speculation about his potential future role in the JD(U), Nishant has consistently stayed away from politics. Nitish Kumar has repeatedly emphasized that his son is content with his career and has no immediate plans to enter the political arena.

Observers note that while Nishant's presence in public life is minimal, his background and connections could make him a significant figure should he decide to follow in his father's footsteps in the future.

Nitish has stated that Nishant is content with his professional career and has no plans to enter politics, a stance he reiterated when Nishant attended a tribute event for freedom fighters in Bakhtiyarpur earlier this year.

Nishant's Public Appearances

In recent months, Nishant made headlines by attending several public events. He joined senior party leaders at a Holi Milan ceremony and accompanied his father to inaugurate the Bakhtiyarpur riverfront. These appearances sparked speculation about his potential political ambitions, although he has not officially joined JD(U) or contested any elections.

Despite these public engagements, Nishant Kumar retreated from the political scene as election preparations began. His absence from JD(U) activities suggests he is not yet ready to follow in his father's footsteps. Instead, he continues to focus on studying socialist leaders like Rammanohar Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan.

Tejaswi Yadav's Political Journey

On the other hand, Tejaswi Yadav launched his political career in 2010 with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). He became an MLA in 2015 after winning from Raghopur and later served as Deputy Chief Minister when the opposition alliance triumphed in the elections. Tejaswi held portfolios such as public works and environment in Nitish Kumar's cabinet.

Lalu Prasad Yadav's elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, also entered politics in 2015 by winning the Mahua assembly seat. He served as Health Minister until July 2017 under Nitish Kumar's government. However, after disagreements with Tejaswi, Tej Pratap established Janshakti Janata Dal on September 26, 2025.

Nishant Kumar's future in politics remains uncertain despite occasional public appearances supporting his father and JD(U). As of now, he seems content observing political developments from a distance while maintaining his professional commitments.
