Why WFI Chief Is Not Being Arrested? Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday questioned the government, asking why WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has not been arrested, yet.

He is facing sexual harassment allegations from seven grapplers and the country's top wrestlers have been protesting against him for over a month, demanding his arrest.

"Our wrestlers were beaten up and tortured. I talked to wrestlers and extended our support to them. We are in solidarity with them," said West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. "...a person is accused of physical assault, why he is not being arrested? 'Puja-path' happens only when humanity is worshipped...," she added.

On the other hand, the protesting wrestlers have said that they will throw their medals in the river Ganga in Haridwar today at 6 pm and go on a fast unto death at the India Gate.

Talking about the Manipur issue, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah saying that he was not speaking to the people of the violence-hit state of Manipur.

She claimed that Shah decided to visit Manipur after she wrote a letter seeking permission to visit the trouble-hit state.

"I also wrote a letter seeking permission to visit Manipur and talk to the peace-loving people of Manipur. Since I wrote a letter, that's why he (Union HM Amit Shah) did that. Despite visiting Manipur, he isn't speaking with the people of the state," Banerjee said.

The Bengal CM also demanded the government reveal the number of deaths in Manipur in connection with the violence.

"I have been saying for so many days that they should visit Manipur. So many people died, the country must be told how many people died in the state and what's the situation in Manipur," she added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in strife-torn Manipur on Monday night to try to restore peace by hammering out a solution between the warring communities.

On Monday, Shah chaired a meeting with Manipur CM, Biren Singh along with other state ministers. During the meeting, he evaluated the situation in the violence-hit state. The state has been witnessing violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 3.

Shah will address the media on Wednesday and announce the measures that have been initiated to control the ongoing situation. He will fly out of Manipur on Thursday.

The violence broke out following a Tribal Solidarity March which was organised in the hill district on May 3. They are protesting the Meitei community's demand for Schedule Tribe status. The violence was also preceded by the tension over the eviction of the Kuki villagers from the reserve forest lands which has led to a series of agitations.

So far, 75 lives have been lost.
