Why Uttar Pradesh May Soon Be Without Male Tailors And Trainers

Women in Uttar Pradesh may soon find it difficult to have their clothes stitched by male tailors or receive training from men at gyms and yoga centers. This potential change could become reality if the safety proposals put forward by the state's Women's Commission are implemented.

The Uttar Pradesh State Women's Commission has proposed a set of guidelines aimed at improving women's safety. Among the key suggestions is a ban on male tailors taking women's measurements and restrictions on men training women in gyms and yoga sessions, according to a report by TOI.

In an effort to improve security in public and commercial areas, the Commission has proposed the inclusion of female security personnel on school buses, as well as the hiring of female staff in women's clothing stores.

These recommendations were addressed during a meeting on October 28 in Lucknow, where commission members evaluated various safety measures aimed at protecting women.

"Feasibility yet to be decided..."

"The feasibility of these proposals is still under consideration. Once approved, they will be submitted to the government for policy development and ground-level implementation," said Maneesha Ahlawat, a member of the Women's Commission, as quoted by TOI.

Although Ahlawat emphasized that the discussions were still in the early stages, a probationary officer from Shamli district has already directed local establishments to begin adopting these guidelines.

The officer's key directives include the mandatory presence of female trainers in women's gyms, drama centers, and yoga sessions, as well as the installation of CCTV systems with DVR capabilities. Furthermore, stores selling women's clothing are required to employ female staff to assist customers, according to the report.

In 2022, the Yogi Adityanath-led government introduced rules that prohibited female workers from doing night shifts in factories unless they gave written consent. The policy also set restrictions on work hours, banning women from working before 6 am or after 7 pm.
