Why The AIADMK-BJP Alliance Broke Up: Decoding The Factors

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) announced on Monday that it was leaving the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and would form a separate front for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The AIADMK's decision to part ways with the BJP alliance, created political ripples in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

K.P. Munusamy, a former minister and senior leader, briefed reporters on the meeting and said that the party had unanimously resolved to part ways with the NDA and lead a coalition of like-minded parties in the next year's elections.

Why The AIADMK-BJP Alliance Broke Up: Decoding The Factors

A Brief History:

The AIADMK and BJP initially formed an alliance in the 1998 general elections, securing 30 out of 39 seats in Tamil Nadu. However, this alliance turned sour due to differences between leaders. By 1999, the alliance was strained, with then-Chief Minister Jayalalithaa becoming unhappy with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for not meeting her demands. Subsequently, the alliance collapsed, and Jayalalithaa even hosted a tea party with Sonia Gandhi, marking a significant political shift.

In 1999, the AIADMK joined hands with the Congress to contest against the DMK-BJP alliance in the general elections, where the latter won 26 out of 39 seats. However, the DMK soon left the alliance, and the BJP never realigned with them.

The AIADMK and BJP have formed an alliance on several occasions over the years, but with limited success. Their most recent partnership, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, resulted in a resounding defeat. In the 2021 assembly elections, the AIADMK lost to the DMK, ending its 10-year rule in the state.

BJP-AIADMK marriage falls apart after months of discord

The AIADMK and the NDA have been allies for over two decades. However, the alliance began to show signs of strain in recent years, and it finally collapsed in 2023. There are a number of factors that contributed to the breakdown of the alliance.

The trigger point for the most-recent flare up between the two parties was sparked by the comments made by Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai regarding the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C N Annadurai.

Controversial remarks about former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravidian icon CN Annadurai: Annamalai made controversial remarks about CN Annadurai, a former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravidian icon. Annamalai alleged that Annadurai had insulted Hinduism at an event in Madurai in 1956. These remarks sparked outrage among Dravidian parties and supporters, including the AIADMK. The AIADMK demanded an apology from Annamalai and the BJP, but the BJP refused. This incident further strained relations between the two parties.

One of the major problem in the alliance is around the BJP state president, Annamalai, who assumed the role in 2021. This former dynamic IPS officer, known for his outspoken nature, frequently clashes with the AIADMK. His direct statements, such as, "As long as I'm alive, no one can view the BJP in Tamil Nadu as a junior partner in an alliance," and "I'm not pursuing positions; I'm here to establish the BJP as the governing party in Tamil Nadu," often provoke the AIADMK.

Disagreements over seat sharing in the Erode East Assembly bypoll: In 2023, the AIADMK and the BJP were at loggerheads over seat sharing in the Erode East Assembly bypoll. The AIADMK announced its candidate without consulting the BJP. This angered the BJP, which accused the AIADMK of arrogance and betrayal.

Poaching wars between the two parties: In 2023, there were several poaching wars between the AIADMK and the BJP, with both parties trying to lure leaders and cadres from the other party. This created further bitterness and mistrust between the two allies.

Failed meetings in Delhi: In an attempt to resolve the differences between the two parties, several meetings were held in Delhi between senior leaders of the AIADMK and the BJP. However, these meetings failed to produce any concrete results.
