Why PM Modi Can't Visit Manipur? CM Biren Singh Responds To Congress' Questions

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh countered Congress leader Jairam Ramesh's criticism regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the violence-stricken state. Singh questioned why former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao did not visit Manipur during the 1992-93 turmoil. Addressing the media on December 31, 2024, Singh expressed regret over the past year's events and hoped for peace in the coming year.

Singh apologised to Manipur's residents for the unrest since May 3, 2023. He acknowledged the loss of lives and displacement of many people. "This entire year has been very unfortunate. I want to say sorry to the people of the state for what's happening till today since last May 3. Many people lost their loved ones. Many people left their homes. I feel regret. I apologise," he stated.

Political Blame Game

Jairam Ramesh criticised Modi for not visiting Manipur despite travelling extensively elsewhere. "Why can't the Prime Minister go to Manipur and say the same thing there? He has deliberately avoided visiting the state since May 4th, 2023, even as he jets around the country and the world," Ramesh posted on X.

In response, Singh accused Congress of causing Manipur's current turmoil by settling Burmese refugees and signing agreements with Myanmar-based militants. "Everyone, including yourself, is aware that Manipur is in turmoil today because of the past sins committed by the Congress," Singh said.

Historical Context

The Chief Minister highlighted past ethnic conflicts in Manipur, questioning why previous leaders did not visit during those times. He mentioned that approximately 1,300 people died during Naga-Kuki clashes between 1992 and 1997. "Did Shri PV Narasimha Rao...come to Manipur to extend an apology?" Singh asked.

Singh also referred to Kuki-Paite clashes that claimed 350 lives between 1997-1998 when IK Gujral was Prime Minister. "Did he visit Manipur and say sorry to the people?" he added, criticising Congress for politicising issues instead of resolving them.

Current Unrest

The ongoing unrest in Manipur has resulted in over 180 deaths since May last year due to tensions over Scheduled Tribe status demands by Meities and opposition from tribal Kukis. The Chief Minister urged all communities to forgive past mistakes and work towards a peaceful future.

"I want to appeal to all the communities in the state, whatever happened has happened. You have to forgive and forget the past mistakes and we have to start a new life (towards) a peaceful and prosperous Manipur," Singh appealed.

N Biren Singh previously belonged to Congress but switched allegiance to BJP after disagreements with then-Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh. His recent statements reflect his commitment as Chief Minister while addressing political challenges faced by his administration.
