Who Will Be Next BJP President? Who Are The Frontrunners To Replace JP Nadda?
As speculation grows over who will take the reins as the next President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the current President, J.P. Nadda, is on an extended term while the party considers its leadership future. From its humble beginnings with just two members, the BJP has transformed into a political giant under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is now serving his third consecutive term. The party boasts a membership of 18 crore and is ambitiously aiming to add another nine crore members during its ongoing membership drive.
The signal for succession became clear when Nadda was elevated to a key role within Modi's cabinet, assuming leadership of the Rajya Sabha, indicating that the party is actively scouting for a new leader to guide it into the next phase.

Organisational polls that are currently underway will be the precursor to the election of the new BJP President, set to take place by early next year. This meticulous process requires careful planning and execution, involving polls at multiple tiers: block, district, and state levels.
Last week, Nadda catalyzed the process of electing the party President by appointing Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Laxman to oversee the polls, with the support of Vice-President Rekha Verma, along with MPs Sambit Patra and Naresh Bansal. The selection of the new President is crucial for maintaining the party's momentum, especially as it seeks to meet its ambitious membership target.
Nadda's tenure has been marked by key electoral battles, including the recent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in 2024. While the BJP achieved some victories, it also faced challenges, notably falling short of a majority in the Lok Sabha, leading to a coalition with parties such as JD (U) and TDP to form the current government.
As the party contemplates a successor to Nadda, the ideal candidate is expected to possess a unique blend of qualities. Nadda's gentile and diplomatic approach, which eschewed confrontation with influential figures like Modi and Amit Shah, is something the party might seek to replicate. However, there are undercurrents within the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) that advocate for a leader who can operate independently and will not be overshadowed by the Modi-Shah duo.
The election process is rigorous; at least 20 state executive members must propose a candidate, who must then be supported by members from at least four different states. Moreover, all national and state executive members are entitled to vote, but historically, the BJP President has been chosen through consensus rather than contest, often elected unopposed due to a lack of competing nominations.
Who Are The Frontrunners?
As the party gears up for this significant transition, a lineup of potential candidates has emerged. Among the frontrunners are prominent Cabinet ministers such as Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupendra Yadav, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Rajnath Singh, and Maharashtra leader Devendra Fadnavis. Each candidate brings their own strengths and weaknesses, with the decision-cloaked in a veil of political strategy.
The Modi-Shah axis is expected to prefer a candidate with whom they have a strong working relationship, whereas the RSS is pushing for a leader with substantial political experience who can navigate the complexities of party dynamics.
As the BJP heads towards this pivotal moment in its history, the choice of the next BJP President will be instrumental in shaping the party's future and fulfilling its ambitious goals. With the deadline for the BJP presidential election fast approaching, all eyes will be on the BJP as it enters its next chapter of leadership and strategy.
