Who Was Malaika Arora's Father Anil Mehta, Died By Suicide In Mumbai?

At the time of the incident, Malaika was not in Mumbai. Her mother, Joyce Polycarp's statement to the police sheds light on the moments leading up to the tragedy.

She mentioned that Anil had a daily habit of sitting in the balcony and reading newspapers every morning. Joyce and Anil, who were divorced, had started living together again in the past few years. On the fateful morning, she noticed her ex-husband's slippers in the living room but could not find him in his usual spot in the balcony. Worried, she leaned over and looked below, only to hear the building's watchman shouting for help, according to a report in News18.

Joyce also clarified to the police that Anil was not suffering from any major illness, apart from some knee pain. Anil Mehta, who had taken voluntary retirement from the Merchant Navy, was described as a disciplined man with a calm demeanor.

Anil Mehta was a Punjabi Hindu from Fazilka, a border town in India. He had married Joyce Polycarp, a Malayali Christian. Together, they had two daughters, Malaika and Amrita. However, their marriage did not last, and they separated when Malaika was just 11 years old, and Amrita was 6.

Despite their separation, Malaika spoke positively about the lessons she learned from her tumultuous childhood in a previous interview with Grazia India. She described her mother as a strong, hardworking woman who instilled in her the importance of independence.

In recent years, Malaika had rekindled her relationship with her father. She was by his side when he was hospitalized in July 2023 and celebrated Christmas in 2022 with both her parents. These moments became especially poignant as they were some of the last memories she created with her father.
