Who is NS Raja Subramani, The New Chief of Defence Staff?

The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd.), as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will assume office on 30 May 2026, following the completion of General Anil Chauhan's tenure. In addition to his role as CDS, Lieutenant General Subramani will serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs.

Lieutenant General Subramani's career spans over four decades of service in the Indian Army. Commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on 14 December 1985, he has risen through the ranks with distinction, holding a wide array of command, staff, and instructional appointments. His operational experience covers diverse terrains and conflict environments, reflecting his adaptability and leadership.

He commanded the 16 Garhwal Rifles during counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino, the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu & Kashmir, and the 17 Mountain Division in the Central Sector during a particularly challenging operational period. His career reached a pinnacle when he commanded II Corps, the Indian Army's premier strike formation on the Western Front, a role that underscored his strategic acumen and operational expertise.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, Lieutenant General Subramani has pursued advanced military education both in India and abroad. He attended the Joint Services Command Staff College in Bracknell, United Kingdom, and the National Defence College in New Delhi. His academic credentials include a Master of Arts from King's College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University. His assignments include serving as Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, Assistant Military Secretary in the Military Secretary's Branch, and Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence at Army Headquarters. He has also been Chief Instructor (Army) at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and Chief of Staff at Northern Command. His tenure as Vice Chief of the Army Staff (July 2024 - July 2025) and later as Military Adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat (from September 2025) further highlight his breadth of experience at the highest levels of military leadership.
