CPI Urges Publication of White Paper on Foreign Funds Influencing Indian Politics Since 2011

The CPIM in West Bengal has raised concerns about foreign funds influencing state politics since the 2011 Assembly elections. They have urged both central and state governments to release a white paper on this issue. These allegations arise amidst US President Donald Trump's comments questioning USAID's $21 million funding for voter turnout in India.

CPI Demands White Paper on Foreign Funds

Foreign Funds and Political Allegations

CPIM West Bengal secretary Mohammed Salim has voiced suspicions about foreign money being used to influence political outcomes. He claims that such funds have been present since the Trinamool Congress came to power in 2011. Salim insists on an independent or judicial investigation to uncover how these funds might have been used to destabilise the region and harm democracy.

Salim also highlighted accusations from the BJP and RSS, who alleged that funds were sent to the INDIA bloc during the last Lok Sabha elections. He pointed out that Trump mentioned $21 million being sent to Prime Minister Modi and the BJP. Salim questioned how the BJP IT cell and TMC would respond to these claims.

Call for Transparency and Investigation

The CPIM has consistently opposed corporate funding and electoral bonds, advocating for transparency in political financing. Salim emphasised the need for a thorough investigation into foreign funding, suggesting that people deserve to know how such money is utilised in politics. He called for either a white paper or an independent probe to address these concerns.

During the 27th State Conference of the CPIM in Hooghly district, Salim spoke with journalists about his past involvement with a committee under Prime Minister IK Gujral's government. This committee was tasked with monitoring foreign fund usage through NGOs. However, Salim noted that after the BJP came to power, this committee was disbanded, and no similar panels were established again.

Historical Context of Foreign Funding

Salim recounted his experience as the head of a committee formed by the Prime Minister's Office during IK Gujral's tenure. This committee aimed to scrutinise how foreign funds were channelled through NGOs. He lamented that after the BJP assumed power, such oversight mechanisms were dismantled, leaving a gap in monitoring foreign financial influences.

The CPIM leader further alleged that foreign money had infiltrated TMC accounts, raising questions about its impact on regional politics. These allegations underscore ongoing concerns about transparency and accountability in political funding within West Bengal.

The demand for a white paper or an independent investigation reflects broader calls for clarity on foreign financial influences in Indian politics. As debates continue, stakeholders emphasise the importance of maintaining democratic integrity and transparency in political processes.
