Which Are the 5 OTT Platforms Blocked In India? Ministry Orders Ban Over Adult, Vulgar Content

In a major move to regulate online content, the Union government has blocked access to five OTT platforms accused of streaming obscene and vulgar material.

The action was taken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure digital platforms follow Indian laws and content guidelines.

Officials said the step aims to maintain public decency and protect viewers, especially minors, from inappropriate content online.

Five OTT Platforms Blocked

The government has ordered Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to restrict access to the following OTT platforms:

• MoodXVIP
• Koyal Playpro
• Digi Movieplex
• Feel
• Jugnu

According to the ministry, these platforms were allegedly hosting content that violated Indian content regulations and obscenity laws. Users in India will now be unable to access these services after the blocking order was implemented.

Action Taken Under IT Act

The decision to block the platforms was taken under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. This provision allows the government to block online content that is considered harmful, illegal or against public order.

Officials said the ministry conducted a detailed review of the platforms and found them non-compliant with the Information Technology Rules, 2021. The content available on these platforms reportedly did not meet the required standards set by Indian laws.
Following the review, instructions were issued to ISPs across the country to disable access to the websites and related services.

Focus on Regulating Digital Content

The crackdown is part of the Centre's broader efforts to regulate digital entertainment and ensure that OTT platforms operate within legal and ethical boundaries. Authorities have been increasing monitoring of online platforms as digital streaming becomes more popular across the country.

Officials said platforms must follow guidelines related to decency, age-appropriate content and public morality. Strict action will be taken against services that ignore these rules.

Protecting Viewers and Minors

Government sources said one of the main reasons behind the action is to protect viewers, especially young audiences, from exposure to explicit content. With the growing reach of OTT platforms, authorities are focusing on ensuring safe and responsible digital entertainment.

The ministry has indicated that monitoring of OTT platforms will continue and more action may be taken if any service is found violating laws or guidelines.

Officials emphasised that the government will keep a close watch on online platforms and take necessary steps whenever violations are detected.
