When Indian security agencies unleashed havoc on Lashkar's social media campaign

Kashmir Uprising 2017 was the theme to cause unrest. Terror groups ran online campaigns from Rawalpindi and Lahore.

There has been an assault on the social media accounts run by terror groups from Pakistan. Over a lakh social media accounts are being run by groups such as the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Mohammad. These terror groups have over a lakh accounts created by their operatives and proxies.

The accounts are used to spread propaganda and mainly plan unrests in Kashmir. While security forces have been battling terrorists on the ground, they realised that there was a bigger battle online.

On the lines of 'Operation Chakravyuh,' Indian security forces came together and launch an attack on the social media accounts run by terrorists. It was a joint operation and several accounts being run by these groups were closed down and countered online.

The operation was not restricted to the social media accounts alone. There were WhatsApp groups to be countered as well. The decision from the top was to battle these groups together. It required a common plan and a joint effort in which the Intelligence Bureau was involved as well.

It was found that online campaigns were being run from Multan, Rawalpindi and Lahore. Groups such as the LeT had set up a dedicated team to spread propaganda and provoke the youth in Kashmir to take up arms. They would run campaigns such as Kashmir Uprising 2017 to cause unrest in the Valley, an IB officer informed.
