‘What’s The Money For?’: BJP Demands Answers In Kolkata Doctor Case

BJP MP Sambit Patra on Friday demanded answers from the West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, regarding the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Patra described it as an attempt to cover up the incident's circumstances.

During a press conference, Patra questioned why money was offered to the victim's father. "A person offers money when he is corrupt and tries to hide something," he stated. He insisted on answers about what needed to be concealed by Mamata Banerjee's government.

Allegations by Victim's Family

The victim's family accused a senior police officer of offering them money when the body was brought home after an autopsy. The father of the murdered junior doctor said that police pressured them into cremating her quickly, even though they wanted to keep her body for some time.

"We wanted to keep the body of our daughter but extraordinary pressure was mounted on us and the body was cremated," the grieving father said during a protest at RG Kar Medical College. He added, "I gave him a piece of my mind and refused to take any money," without specifying why the money was offered.

Protests and Demands

The West Bengal Junior Doctor's Front held a protest march demanding the immediate resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal over the case. They called for accountability and transparency in handling such sensitive matters.

Patra highlighted several questions raised by the victim's father, which he deemed crucial for the investigation. "The first question was that when the body of the victim was in their house, the District Collector offered him money. He refused him the offer. Can you think what would be the mental state of the father after the brutal murder of his daughter?"

Questions Raised by Patra

Patra continued by highlighting how authorities treated the family on learning about their daughter's death. "The second question is that on August 10, the family of the victim knew their daughter was murdered. They were informed at 11 am and told she had committed suicide. The family waited outside a seminar hall for three hours before being asked to go to the principal's office."

One of Patra’s most serious allegations involved coercion into signing a blank document. "The most important thing is that the family was asked to sign on a blank paper by police and authorities. Why were they asked to do so?" he questioned.

Patra emphasized that these questions are fundamental to understanding and resolving this tragic case. He urged for thorough answers from those responsible for investigating this matter.
