The fire erupted on the dance floor of Birch By Romeo Lane in Arpora, triggering chaos as over a hundred people tried to flee. While some escaped in time, many ran downstairs toward the kitchen and were trapped in thick smoke. Their bodies were later found after firefighters brought the flames under control.
How the Fire Spread So Quickly
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the blaze ignited around 1 am when patrons were enjoying the club's Bollywood Banger Night. Fatima Shaikh, a tourist from Hyderabad, recalled the moment panic set in. "There was a sudden commotion as the flames started erupting. We rushed out of the club only to see that the entire structure was up in flames," she told PTI. She added that several tourists fled downstairs where they became trapped with staff members. Fatima pointed out that makeshift structures made of palm leaves were present and caught fire almost instantly.
The nightclub was soon engulfed. Fire crews found 25 bodies inside, including tourists and staff, with some victims yet to be identified.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Narrow Access
Birch By Romeo Lane is situated beside the Arpora River backwaters and is reachable only through narrow lanes. This limited entry and exit route became a major obstacle during the rescue operation. Fire engines could not reach the club directly and were forced to stop about 400 meters away.
A senior fire officer told PTI that the delayed access made firefighting extremely difficult and contributed to the high number of deaths, most caused by suffocation. He said the victims were overcome by smoke after being unable to escape quickly.
Leaders Express Grief and Promise Action
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant called it a "very painful day" for the state and ordered an inquiry into the tragedy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on X, stating, "The fire mishap in Arpora, Goa, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Goa CM Dr Pramod Sawant Ji about the situation. The state government is providing all possible assistance to those affected."
Safety Violations and Local Disputes Under Scrutiny
Arpora Nagoa panchayat sarpanch Roshan Redkar said the nightclub was already entangled in internal disputes among its partners. Complaints had been filed against one another, prompting an inspection by the panchayat.
"We had inspected the premises and found that they did not have the permission to construct the club," Redkar said. A demolition notice had been issued but later halted by the directorate of Panchayats.
Redkar added that the property owner had sublet the venue to Saurav Luthra and that repeated notices had been sent to establishments violating norms. "The fire incident that happened was unfortunate. We have been issuing notices to the establishments that are seen violating the norms. Now, we have to be more vigilant," he told PTI.
