A 35-foot-long whale calf that stranded on the coast of Ganpatipule in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra was successfully pushed back into the sea after 40 hours of efforts. The rescue operation, which involved multiple agencies and local residents, was a rare and challenging endeavor.
Initial Stranding and Rescue Attempts

The whale calf, weighing nearly 4 tons, reached the coast on Monday but got stuck in the sand near the beach due to low tide. Concerned travelers and locals alerted the authorities, including the Ratnagiri police and Coast Guard, who initiated a rescue operation.
Initial attempts by the fire brigade, police, and local residents to push the whale calf back into the sea were unsuccessful, raising concerns about its safety and survival. The rescuers then began pouring seawater to keep the calf hydrated and covered it with cotton to create a suitable environment.
Escalating Efforts and Expert Involvement
A team of veterinary doctors arrived at the scene and administered fluid to the whale calf to keep it alive. However, efforts to push the animal back into the sea using a belt and dragging it caused injuries near its tail, prompting authorities to abort this method.
Marine experts were brought in to monitor the whale calf's health, and a new rescue plan was devised. A tugboat was brought in, and the whale was placed on a net. During high tide, officials and locals worked tirelessly to push the calf into the water.
Successful Rescue and Release
After hours of relentless effort, the whale calf was dragged 7 to 8 nautical miles into the sea by the tugboat in the early hours of Wednesday. Once back in its natural habitat, the whale calf broke the net and started swimming on its own, eventually disappearing into the sea.
The successful rescue operation was the result of collaboration between various stakeholders, including the district administration, Coast Guard, a private company, local villagers, and marine experts, all working alongside the police.
Challenges and Rarest of Rare Rescue
Typically, mammals like this calf face survival challenges after being stranded on the shore for more than 35-40 hours, but this calf defied the odds. The rescue operation was considered one of the rarest of its kind involving a whale calf on the Indian coast.
As a precautionary measure, the forest department has deployed a team of wildlife veterinary specialists to Ratnagiri. The situation is being closely monitored, and further action will be determined based on the whale calf's condition if it returns to the coast.
The rescue of the whale calf stranded on the Maharashtra coast was a testament to the dedication and collaboration of multiple agencies and individuals. The successful outcome brought joy to everyone involved and highlighted the importance of protecting and preserving marine life.
