In a deeply disturbing incident from West Bengal's Hooghly district, the grandfather of a four-year-old girl has been arrested as the prime accused in the sexual assault of the minor.

According to a report by News18, the arrest was made on Sunday following intense investigation into the case that shocked the Tarakeswar region.

Family from Nomadic Community Faces Ordeal Near Railway Station

The horrific crime took place on Friday near Tarakeswar railway station, where the child's family, belonging to a nomadic Banjara community, had been taking shelter. Police said the girl was resting beside her parents when she was allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted.

Sources revealed that the family lacked official identification documents, which initially created hurdles in the investigation. The child's parents approached the local police station after discovering a cut on her throat. She was quickly taken to a hospital for medical examination, though the family reportedly had to do so on their own without police assistance.

Medical Report Confirms Sexual Assault

Doctors examining the child found signs of bleeding and confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted. Following the medical evaluation, panic-stricken family members fled the hospital but later returned, after which the police formally registered a case and launched a detailed inquiry.

Investigators have since confirmed that the child's grandfather is the prime accused and remains in custody as questioning continues. Police presence in and around Tarakeswar has been tightened due to growing tensions in the area.

Political Row Erupts Over Alleged Police Negligence

The case has sparked political outrage in West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the local police of negligence and attempting to suppress the case. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling her a "failed Chief Minister" over what he described as a mishandled investigation.

In a post on X, Adhikari alleged that the police failed to register an FIR even after the victim's family approached them. He claimed officers attempted to "bury the crime" to protect the state government's reputation. condemning the episode as evidence of the "collapse of law and order" under Mamata Banerjee's rule. Adhikari further asserted that local officers were functioning as the Chief Minister's "sycophants" instead of upholding justice.

Following the revelations, BJP workers staged a protest late Friday night demanding immediate justice for the victim and accountability for the lapses in police action. The investigation into the assault continues under tight security, with officials stating that no one found responsible will be spared.
