West Bengal Government Directs Police to Intensify Efforts Against Lynching
To address the rising cases of lynching, the West Bengal government has instructed police officers to take several measures, including enhanced social media monitoring. This directive was issued by State ADG Law and Order Manoj Verma to superintendents of police, commissioners of police, and officers of the STF, cyber cell, and traffic.

Enhanced Social Media Monitoring
The decision follows Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's instructions. The official noted that recent incidents have impacted law and order, prompting the issuance of necessary guidelines. The instruction highlighted that mob lynching incidents have been increasing in recent weeks, necessitating these measures.
West Bengal has seen a series of lynching incidents recently, including a public flogging of a couple. "There is also a need to monitor social media round the clock so that more effective steps can be taken against the accused as well as against the persons who are spreading false propaganda related to such incidents," the order stated.
Utilising Civic Volunteers and Village Police
The order emphasised the importance of using civic volunteers and village police for timely intelligence collection. This would enable prompt action on any mob lynching-related issues. Additionally, it stressed spreading awareness among people about preventing such incidents.
On June 28, a man was beaten to death at a state-run hostel in central Kolkata's Bowbazar area over suspicion of mobile phone theft. The following day, another person was thrashed to death in Salt Lake area on similar suspicions. Two others also died in other districts after being assaulted by mobs.
Prompt Actions Against Crimes
The order also addressed crimes against women, stating that such cases are highly sensitive and require prompt actions. This includes quick registration of cases and swift arrests of accused individuals in heinous crimes.
Referring to several robbery incidents at jewellery shops and other places, the state government directed the police to develop more effective prevention methods. This involves engaging all stakeholders to curb such crimes.
The new measures aim to enhance law enforcement's ability to prevent and respond to lynching incidents effectively. By monitoring social media and utilising local resources, authorities hope to curb this disturbing trend.
