Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Seeks Increase in Indian Tourist Arrivals

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu emphasised India's role as a major tourism source for the Maldives. He expressed hope for increased Indian tourist visits. During a press briefing after discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Muizzu highlighted the long-standing ties between the two nations. His remarks come amid efforts to strengthen relations following tensions earlier this year due to an online boycott campaign against the Maldives.

Muizzu Aims to Attract More Indian Tourists

The Maldives' economy heavily relies on tourism, with its white sand beaches attracting visitors worldwide. Muizzu acknowledged India's significant contribution to this sector and expressed a desire for more Indian tourists. He also noted that many Maldivians visit India for various purposes, including tourism, medical treatment, and education.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Muizzu's visit marks his first official trip to India since winning the presidential election last year. This visit aims to mend ties that had become strained, particularly after he requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives. The relationship faced challenges due to Muizzu's perceived pro-China stance.

Accompanied by First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed and a delegation, Muizzu arrived in India on Sunday evening. Earlier, he received a ceremonial reception and Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The meeting with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House involved reviewing bilateral ties and acknowledging progress in their historically close relationship.

Future Cooperation and Economic Partnerships

The leaders discussed enhancing cooperation through a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. This partnership aims to be people-centric and future-oriented, serving as a stability anchor in the Indian Ocean Region. Both sides agreed to boost tourism through marketing campaigns and collaborative efforts.

Muizzu stressed the importance of a democratic and resilient Maldives for regional peace. He recognised India's role in maritime security due to geographical proximity. Looking forward, he expressed commitment to strengthening cooperation across various areas, fostering deeper understanding between the nations.

Next year marks the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. Muizzu invited Prime Minister Modi for a State Visit to commemorate this milestone. He reiterated the Maldives' commitment to shared peace and development goals.

The Maldivian president also mentioned plans to conclude a free trade agreement with India. This agreement aims to unlock economic potential and increase Indian investments in tourism and other development sectors.

Muizzu expressed confidence in continued collaboration leading to a brighter future for both countries. He emphasised that the Maldives remains a true friend committed to their shared vision of regional peace and development.
