Weather Update: Cyclone Biparjoy Intensifies Into Severe Cyclonic Storm
Cyclonic storm, named 'Biparjoy' has rapidly intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, with meteorologists predicting a mild monsoon onset over Kerala and "weak" progress beyond southern peninsula under its influence.
It is the first storm brewing in the Arabian Sea this year.

"Severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm and lay centered at 11.30 hours IST today over about 860 km west-southwest of Goa, 970 km southwest of Mumbai, 1050 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1350 km south of Karachi," the IMD said in its latest update.
According to reports, 'Biparjoy' is not likely to have a major impact on India's west coast but it can further delay the onset of monsoon over Kerala by driving away moisture.
However, the Indian Meteorological Department has not made any predictions about where it will touch the coast.
In the wake of the cyclone warning and rain forecast, sea conditions are likely to be very high along and off the Kerala-Karnataka coasts and Lakshadweep-Maldives areas from June 8 to June 10.
As a result of this, the wind speed will be 80 to 90 km per hour in the East Central Arabian Sea and the adjacent West Central and Southeast Arabian Sea. The wind speed will reach 105-125 kmph by evening.
The maximum wind speed is 145 to 155 and is likely to reach 170 km after the cyclone turns into a very severe cyclonic storm.
The weather department has advised fishermen not to venture out at sea and return to the coast.
