Unnao Bus Accident

The incident occurred just a day after a similar accident in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, where 18 people were killed and 19 injured when a double-decker sleeper bus en route to Delhi collided with a milk tanker on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. The crash happened around 5 am near Jojikot village in the Behta Mujhawar police station area.

District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi stated that the bus, travelling from Motihari in Bihar, was likely speeding when it hit the milk tanker from behind. An investigation has been initiated. Rathi mentioned that 20 passengers with minor injuries were sent to Delhi on another bus carrying 60 people.

Additional Director General of Police, Lucknow, SB Shiradkar, reported to PTI that the accident claimed the lives of 14 men, three women, and a child. Bangarmau Circle Officer (CO) Arvind Kumar noted that both the bus and the milk tanker overturned due to the collision, with the drivers among the deceased. The injured were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition.

Debris, glass shards, and personal belongings were strewn across the highway near the overturned vehicles. Cranes were used to upright the bus and tanker, which were then towed away. The collision left the front of the bus severely damaged, with one side torn open. Initially, police reported that 14 bodies had been identified, but later clarified that only 10 had been confirmed.

An injured passenger, Chandni, mentioned that there were about 60 passengers on the bus and that officials arrived at the scene an hour after the incident. She expressed gratitude to the local administration for arranging a video call with her husband. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to provide the best possible treatment for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased.
