Was Meta's Threads the Fastest Tech Flop of All Time?

Meta's Threads was a social media app that was launched in July 2023 as a rival to Twitter. The app was designed to be a more personal and intimate way for users to connect with their friends and family. Threads allowed users to share photos, videos, and text in a more ephemeral way than other social media platforms.

Threads was initially met with a lot of excitement. The app quickly reached 100 million users in just five days, making it one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in history. However, Threads' popularity quickly declined after that. By the end of its first month, the app had lost half of its users. And by the end of its first year, Threads had only a few million active users.

Was Metas Threads the Fastest Tech Flop of All Time?

There are a number of reasons why Threads may have failed to live up to its initial promise. First, the app was not very different from other social media platforms. It offered the same basic features as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. As a result, there was no real reason for users to switch to Threads.

Second, Threads was not very well-integrated with other Meta products. Users could not easily share their Threads posts to Facebook or Instagram. This made it difficult for users to build a following on Threads.

Third, Threads was not very well-marketed. Meta did not do a good job of promoting the app to its existing users. As a result, many people were unaware of Threads even existed.

In the end, Threads was a victim of its own hype. The app was launched with a lot of fanfare, but it simply did not live up to expectations.

It must be also noted that Elon Musk's legal team has threatened to sue Meta for allegedly stealing trade secrets by hiring away former Twitter workers. The team sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accusing the company of hiring dozens of former Twitter employees who had access to the company's "trade secrets and other highly confidential information."

The letter also alleges that Meta used this information to develop its own social media app, Threads. Threads is a rival to Twitter that allows users to share photos, videos, and text in a more ephemeral way than other social media platforms.

Threads users spending less time on the app

After its initial launch on July 6, Threads garnered significant global interest, but this enthusiasm quickly waned, and its popularity dropped back to the same level as July 5, within just one week.

Similarweb, a tracking company, also presented parallel findings, indicating a substantial decline of over 51 percent in active Android users, reducing from 40 million to 23.6 million by July 14. Moreover, the time spent on the app experienced an even more significant decrease, with users spending only three to six minutes daily on Threads.

Netizens also took to micro-blogging platform to express that the Instagram's new Twitter competitor Threads is already losing steam.

There are a number of possible explanations for the decline in Threads' popularity. Only time will tell whether Threads can recover from its current decline. However, the early signs are not encouraging.
