In a remarkable display of courage and camaraderie, paratroopers, including seasoned veterans, took to the skies over Dighi Hills in Pune on Tuesday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the War Memorial of the Bombay Sappers Group (BEG).
Breathtaking Para Jumps
More than 100 paratroopers from the elite 411 Independent Para Field Company, accompanied by seven senior veterans, executed static line and free fall jumps, captivating the audience with their precision and fearlessness. This marked the commencement of a four-yearly reunion event that brings together the entire Bombay Sappers fraternity.
Veterans Defy Age
Among the veterans who participated in the jumps were 75-year-old former Engineer-in-Chief, Lt Gen R R Goswami, 74-year-old Brig S R Mazgaonkar, 66-year-old Brig R G Divekar, and 61-year-old former Central Army Commander Lt Gen Yogendra Dimri. Their participation showcased their unwavering spirit and deep sense of belonging to the Bombay Sappers.
Paramotor Pilots Add to the Spectacle
Adding to the excitement were the Paramotor pilots who recently completed the East-West Kutch to Kibithu Paramotor expedition as a tribute to the War Memorial Centenary. These pilots mesmerized the crowd with their low-level flying and acrobatic maneuvers.
Traditional Displays of Gatka and Malkhamb
The event also featured traditional displays of Gatka, a martial art form involving wooden sticks, and Malkhamb, a sport that combines gymnastics and acrobatics on a vertical pole. These performances added a cultural touch to the celebrations.
War Memorial: A Symbol of Sacrifice and Valor
BEG Commandant Brig Dilip Patwardhan, who successfully completed a jump, spoke about the significance of the War Memorial. He referred to it as a "Shraddha Sthaan," a sacred place that symbolizes sacrifice, valor, and selfless service. Brig Patwardhan highlighted that the Memorial, which serves as the logo of the Bombay Sappers, was erected in February 1923 and has recently been expanded to include the names of brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
The War Memorial Centenary celebrations in Pune served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the Bombay Sappers. The event brought together veterans and current members of the fraternity, showcasing their unwavering commitment to duty, courage, and camaraderie.
