WAQF: Calcutta HC Says Central Force Should Stay In Murshidabad, Asks Leaders Not To Give Provocative Speeches

Taking cognizance of the Murshidabad violence, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday said central forces will remain deployed in the district, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere. High Court's order came amidst efforts to stabilize the region after disturbances linked to opposition against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Justices Soumen Sen and Raja Basu Chowdhury, leading the division bench, have expressly forbidden any inflammatory speeches, holding all parties to this restriction. This measure aims to prevent further exacerbation of the tense situation that erupted into violence on April 11 and 12, impacting several areas including Suti, Jangipur, Shamsherganj, and Dhulian.

The state government, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and guided by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has been instructed to assemble a team focused on the recovery and reintegration of individuals displaced by the turmoil. These efforts are crucial for those who sought refuge in neighboring districts to escape the chaos.

The court's intervention has underscored the necessity of swift action to address the humanitarian concerns arising from the conflict, which has already claimed three lives and left hundreds homeless. Additionally, the government has been proactive in its peacekeeping efforts, forming two Special Investigation Teams (SITs) to delve into the incidents of violence, signaling a thorough approach to understanding and resolving the root causes of unrest.

Amidst ongoing disturbances, the High Court has received requests from the state government to restrict access to Murshidabad, advocating for a period of calm before reopening the area to outsiders. This precautionary stance is part of a broader strategy to ensure the restoration of law and order, with the government employing various measures such as drone surveillance, internet service suspension, and the enforcement of prohibitory orders. These actions reflect a comprehensive attempt to curb the spread of violence and misinformation, while also facilitating the rehabilitation of affected families. To date, 38 families have been resetted, and 79 individuals have been apprehended in relation to a double homicide, highlighting the state's commitment to justice and community restoration.

Despite the severity of the situation, the Mamata Banerjee administration has faced criticism, particularly from Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition, who claims that the disturbances have spread to several districts. The state's legal representation has refuted these allegations, maintaining that the situation is contained.
