VS Achuthanandan (1923–2025): Former Kerala CM and CPI(M) Stalwart Dies at 101
VS Achuthanandan, former Kerala Chief Minister and a towering figure in Indian Communist politics, passed away on July 21 at the age of 101 in Thiruvananthapuram. He had been undergoing treatment at SUT Hospital since June 23 after suffering a cardiac arrest. A founding leader of the CPI(M), Achuthanandan was the last surviving member of the group that broke away from the Communist Party of India in 1964 to form the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Born on 20 October 1923 in Punnapra, Alappuzha, Achuthanandan was deeply influenced by the region's coir workers and the fiery speeches of leaders like VK Karunakaran. He joined the Communist movement before turning 18 and took part in the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising at 23, sustaining severe injuries during the crackdown. He was arrested post-Independence during the ban on the Communist party but continued his political journey with unshakable commitment.
Achuthanandan was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly at the age of 44 and became the Chief Minister in 2006 at 82. His tenure witnessed key developments like the Vallarpadam transhipment terminal and proposals for Kannur International Airport. As an Opposition leader and legislator, he remained vocal against forest encroachments, illegal lottery businesses, and police atrocities in tribal regions like Muthanga. He also took a strong stand against Coca-Cola's operations in Plachimada.
Known for his sharp wit, rebellious spirit, and sarcasm-laced speeches, VS Achuthanandan often clashed with leaders within his own party, especially Pinarayi Vijayan. His visit to KK Rema, widow of slain rebel leader TP Chandrasekharan, cemented his image as a principled rebel within the CPI(M) ranks. Despite being sidelined in party decisions at times, public support brought him back to electoral politics in 2011 and 2016.
Post-2016, when Pinarayi Vijayan took over as Chief Minister, Achuthanandan was made Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission-a largely symbolic position that he held until declining health limited his activities.
With his passing, Kerala bids goodbye to a political icon who spanned generations-from underground activism to democratic governance. VS Achuthanandan's contributions to Kerala's socio-political fabric, his fight against corruption, and his enduring connection with the masses will remain etched in history.
