Assam Elections: Counting of Votes for Lok Sabha Seats Begins

The anticipation is high in Assam as the state gears up for the vote count of its 14 Lok Sabha seats, determining the future of 143 candidates. Among the notable names are Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of Opposition Gaurav Gogoi. The counting process is scheduled to commence at 8 am on Tuesday, with preparations spread across 152 halls in 52 centres throughout the state. Officials have confirmed that security measures are robust to ensure a smooth counting process.

Vote Counting Starts in Assam

Assam's 13 districts, currently grappling with flood challenges, have received directives from district authorities to implement appropriate measures for an uninterrupted vote count. The state election department is working closely with the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to guarantee seamless power and internet services during the counting. A total of 1,941 counting tables will be set up in 152 rooms, manned by 5,823 personnel and overseen by 64 general observers.

The electoral battle saw polling conducted in three phases on April 19, April 26, and May 7 across various constituencies including Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Guwahati. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fielded candidates in all 14 seats, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contesting in 11, while its allies - the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL) - contested in two and one seat respectively. The Congress led the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA), contesting in 13 seats and supporting the Assam Jatiya Parishad in Dibrugarh. Other parties such as the AIUDF and AAP also participated with candidates in select constituencies.

Noteworthy contestants include sitting BJP MPs Topon Gogoi, Pradan Barua, and others such as Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Tasa and Assam Minister Parimal Suklabaidya. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has returned to Assam to await the results alongside state party president Bhabesh Kalita at the Vajpayee Bhawan. The Congress has prepared its 'war room' at the Rajiv Bhawan for the counting day, with spokesperson Bedabrata Bora confirming adherence to instructions from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which has also established two toll-free numbers for complaint registration related to the counting process.

As Assam stands on the cusp of determining its Lok Sabha representatives, all eyes are on this northeastern state. With extensive preparations in place to ensure a fair and efficient count amidst natural adversities and logistical challenges, the outcome will undoubtedly have a significant impact on both local and national political landscapes.
