NHRC Chairperson Stresses Importance of Violence-Free Elections

In an event marking the 30th anniversary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), retired Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, NHRC chairperson, emphasized on October 12 that violence hampers free and fair elections. He insisted on the State's responsibility to ensure a peaceful electoral environment so that citizens can fully exercise their fundamental democratic rights.

violence-free elections

Mishra highlighted in his address that our Constitution guarantees various fundamental rights reflecting principles of life with equality, justice, freedom, and dignity - these are at the core of human rights. The NHRC is there to support those who lack this support. "Our Constitution aims for justice for all," he said. "Equality cannot be achieved without an independent and impartial judiciary." He further stressed how Article 50 of India's constitution ensures separation of power which contributes towards this goal.

The Right to Vote

Mishra pointed out that human rights include the right to vote and participate in elections to elect a government. However, violence significantly impacts free and fair elections. Therefore, it is crucial for the state to guarantee violence-free elections so citizens can enjoy their basic democratic rights.

Concerns About Media Debates

Mishra also expressed concern over declining standards in media debates. He emphasized everyone's responsibility in ensuring a positive influence on younger generations rather than promoting uncivil dialogue.

Fighting Corruption

"Corruption compromises human dignity," warned Mishra during his speech. According to him, corruption destroys souls and is unacceptable within any civilized society; therefore we must unite against it as it impedes development.

National Education Policy (NEP)

Discussing NEP, Mishra stated its intent was addressing several troubling aspects of our old system. However, he also stressed the need to reconsider the burden placed on school children and those preparing for competitive exams. He highlighted concerns over increasing student suicides and depression due to an overly mechanical and burdensome education system.

Gender Equality & Trafficking

Mishra asserted that defining and implementing gender equality are now more important than ever. Regarding trafficking, he said trafficked women and girls often lack access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, anti-poverty programs, or socio-economic welfare schemes leading to exploitation. Their children bear the brunt of these issues too.

LGBTQIA+ Rights & Violent Extremism

Mishra underscored the importance of recognizing LGBTQIA+'s rights along with understanding their challenges. He warned against violent extremism as it threatens human rights, international peace, security, and sustainable development. Therefore it is crucial to boost international collaboration in this area.

In conclusion Mishra stated "In an ever-changing world, enduring value of human rights remains a guiding light reminding us about shared responsibility in creating a just inclusive society for all." The NHRC was established on October 12th 1993 under Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA) , amended by Protection of Human Rights Amendment Act 2006. Since its inception NHRC has resolved more than 22 lakh cases recommending payment worth Rs 230 crore as monetary relief to victims of human right violations according to officials.
