Vaiko up against Modi govt, holds it responsible for death sentence of fishermen in SL

Vaiko demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should react strongly to the arrests and work towards their immediate release. Vaiko said,"It's the red-carpet reception by the central government that has emboldened the Rajapaksa Government... they want to bully our fishermen."
Political parties in the state believe that the fishermen did not receive a fair trial as the judges were the henchmen of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
They had been arrested in 2011 on charges of carrying drugs in Sri Lanka. Post the swearing-in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where Rajapaksa was invited, few hyndred fishermen held for trespassing were released. But the ones accused of drug peddling were not let go.
