Uttam Mohanty's Funeral Conducted with Full State Honours in Odisha Amidst Emotional Tributes

The remains of renowned Odia actor Uttam Mohanty were cremated at Satya Nagar crematorium on Friday. Hundreds of fans gathered, chanting "Uttam Mohanty Amar Rahe" as his son, Babushan, lit the pyre. The Odisha government honoured him with a guard of honour. Mohanty passed away at 66 in a New Delhi hospital on Thursday night.

Odisha Police ensured smooth arrangements for the funeral, following directives from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Earlier, Majhi visited Mohanty's residence in Jagannath Vihar to pay floral tributes and console his wife, Aparajita Mohanty. BJD MLA Nanta Narayan Jena also paid respects on behalf of the party.

Tributes and Condolences Pour In

At Biju Patnaik International Airport, OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das offered his last respects as Mohanty's body arrived from New Delhi. Numerous cine artists, cultural figures, and fans gathered at his residence to bid farewell to the beloved actor. His passing has left a significant void in the Odia film industry.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow over Mohanty's death, stating, "I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the demise of eminent film actor Shri Uttam Mohanty. Shri Mohanty won the hearts of countless viewers by playing the lead role in many Odia films. His contribution to the development of Odia film will always be remembered. As a soft-spoken and humble gentleman, he was the idol of all. His demise has caused an irreparable loss to the Odia film world. My condolences to his family and fans."

Legacy and Achievements

Born in Baripada town, Mayurbhanj district, Mohanty starred in 135 Odia and 30 Bengali films. His notable works include "Danda Balunga," "Jahaku Rakhibe Ananta," and "Rajanigandha." He also appeared in the Hindi film "Naya Zaher." In 1987, he married Aparajita Mohanty, another prominent figure in Odia cinema.

Mohanty's career was decorated with numerous accolades such as the Jayadev Award in 1999 for his contributions to Odia cinema, Odisha Living Legend Award in 2012, and several Orissa State Film Awards. His influence extended beyond acting; he was known for promoting physical fitness among youth through his dance numbers.

Impact on Odia Cinema

Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati shared his grief on X: "Upon learning about the passing away of veteran Ollywood actor Uttam Mohanty, Honorable Governor Shri @DrHariBabuK expressed grief and prayed for the eternal peace of his soul and extended his condolences to the bereaved family members."

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also mourned Mohanty's loss: "I am saddened to learn about the demise of the popular and legendary actor of the Odia film world, Uttam Mohanty. It has created a huge void in the art world. The mark he left in many films will forever keep him in the hearts of people. In such a sad time, I express my condolences to the bereaved family and pray for the eternal peace of his soul."

Film critic Surya Deo noted that Uttam Mohanty was Odisha's first "chocolate hero," entering the industry when there was a need for a romantic lead. He emphasized fitness and became a trendsetter with his dance numbers during the eighties and nineties.

Mohanty's death marks a profound loss for Odia cinema. His contributions have left an indelible mark on both fans and colleagues alike.
