Utkal Divas Celebrations to Showcase Odia Culture and Traditions in Odisha
The Mohan Charan Majhi government has unveiled plans for a grand celebration of Utkal Divas. This day, also known as Odisha Day, marks the formation of Odisha on April 1, 1936. The state was established based on linguistic identity, separating from the Bihar and Orissa province under British rule. Celebrations will highlight Odisha's rich culture and traditions.

Odisha Culture Minister Suryavansi Suraj announced that this year's festivities will be particularly special. "This year, for the first time, Odia Paksha will be celebrated with great pomp from Odisha Day on April 1 to the Odia New Year on April 14," he stated. Various government departments will organise events from the block level to the state level.
Odia Asmita and Cultural Pride
The celebrations aim to promote Odia culture, customs, and traditions globally. Suraj explained that different days between April 1 and April 14 will focus on showcasing Odisha's language, culture, festivals, dress, and other elements representing Odia Asmita pride. The BJP's rise to power in the state was bolstered by their emphasis on Odia Asmita during Assembly elections.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is set to participate in the Odia Paksha celebration at Satyabhamapur in Cuttack district on April 1. This location is significant as it is the birthplace of Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das. The event underscores the importance of cultural heritage in fostering state pride.
BJD's Involvement in Celebrations
The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by Naveen Patnaik, also announced their plans to observe Utkal Divas across all assembly segments and districts. Debi Prasad Mishra, Chairman of BJD Coordination Committee, emphasised honouring those who contributed to Odisha's creation based on linguistic identity.
Atanu S Nayak, convenor of the BJD Membership Campaign Committee, detailed their statewide commemoration plans. "We will celebrate the day as it reflects the remarkable history of Odisha and the great men and women who fought for its linguistic identity," Mishra said. Their activities include photo tributes and discussion circles at statues of historical figures pivotal to Odisha's formation.
While leaders will participate in various districts, BJD president Naveen Patnaik will attend celebrations at Shankha Bhavan in Bhubaneswar. This gathering at the party's state headquarters highlights their commitment to recognising Odisha's historical significance and cultural legacy.
The upcoming Utkal Divas celebrations promise to be a vibrant display of Odisha's cultural richness. Both government initiatives and political parties are keen to honour the state's history and its notable figures. These events aim to foster a deeper appreciation for Odisha's unique identity among its people.
