US Issues Level-2 Travel Advisory for India, Warns Women Against Solo Travel
The United States has issued a Level-2 travel advisory for India, urging its citizens to "exercise increased caution" due to rising concerns over crime and terrorism. The alert, released by the US State Department on June 16, highlights multiple safety risks across various regions in India, especially for solo female travelers.

Crime and Terrorism Highlighted as Key Risks
According to the official advisory, rape is among the fastest-growing crimes in India, and violent crimes, including sexual assault, frequently occur at popular tourist spots and public areas.
The advisory also warned of possible terrorist attacks, which "may occur with little or no warning," especially in crowded places such as:
Markets
Transportation hubs
Shopping malls
Government buildings
Limited US Government Support in Rural Areas
The US government noted that it has limited ability to assist American citizens in India's rural regions, especially in:
Eastern Maharashtra
Northern Telangana
Western West Bengal
Because of these safety concerns, US government employees must receive special authorization to travel to these areas.
Travel Restrictions and Safety Guidelines
The travel advisory laid out important dos and don'ts for US citizens visiting India:
Avoid traveling alone, especially if you are a woman.
Possession of satellite phones or GPS devices is illegal in India.
Penalties may include fines up to $200,000 or imprisonment up to three years.
High-Risk Regions Flagged in the Advisory
The advisory specifically urges caution or avoidance in the following areas:
Jammu & Kashmir
India-Pakistan border regions
Parts of central and eastern India
In addition, US government employees must receive official approval to travel beyond the capital cities in the following states:
Bihar
Jharkhand
Chhattisgarh
West Bengal
Meghalaya
Odisha
Travel to eastern Maharashtra and eastern Madhya Pradesh also requires clearance.
Border & Northeast India Travel Restrictions
The advisory further discourages land travel across the India-Nepal border, warning of possible immigration detentions and financial penalties.
The northeastern state of Manipur, along with others in the region, was also flagged for ongoing security concerns, with travelers advised to exercise extreme caution or avoid travel altogether.
