UP's Medical Device Park to bolster vision of ‘Make in India for the World’

A 'Medical Device Park', spread over 350 acre of land, would come up along the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh by the end of this year. The one-of-its-kind park, being developed in Sector 28 of Gautam Buddha Nagar, is situated at a strategic location as it is close to the highways and just 3.5 km from the upcoming international airport at Jewar.

The concept of Medical Device Park, envisioned by the Yogi Adityanath government, aims to provide infrastructure facilities to medical device manufacturers, including common facilities such as testing labs, tool rooms, warehouses and logistics support. It will help reduce the cost of manufacturing, making indigenous manufacturers more competitive and enhance the quality of Indian products.

The park will promote a conducive investment environment and boost FDI inflow into the medical device manufacturing sector through greenfield, brownfield and strategic entry options. It is also expected to offer a range of incentives to manufacturers, such as tax holidays, subsidies and easy access to finance.

While announcing the project, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that there is a lot of opportunity in the medical industry as it is a high-tech and demanding one. "UP produces about 74,000 Pharma graduates annually. In such a situation, UP can easily be developed as a medical hub. Some cities of central and western UP are more suitable for this," the Chief Minister said.

Make in India for the World

The park will be developed in two phases by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). The scheme for establishment of a medical device park is set to bolster the vision of 'Make in India for the World'.

Medically speaking, the park will target key areas like cancer care, radiotherapy medical devices, radiology and imaging medical devices, anaesthetics and cardiorespiratory, renal care medical devices, nuclear imaging devices, implantable and electronic devices.

It will house a central warehouse, convention and exhibition centre, food court bank, recreational area, gym, public utilities, administrative office block, incubation centre, common office complex for MU/CSFs and showrooms.

Giving an update on the project, YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh, who is also the chief of Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL), said, "Several industrial projects are being developed along the expressway to create job opportunities. The Medical Device Park is one of them and it is ready for launch."

"In the first phase, some 37 companies would be handed over possession in the park by the end of this month. We have floated the second phase of the park and received 58 applications so far," he said, adding that the first phase is expected to be completed this year. Several large companies, including Siemens and OMRON, have shown interest in setting up their units in the park, he further added.

Apart from this, Pharma Parks will be constructed in Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur and Hapur on the same lines. The medical devices and medicines so manufactured in UP will be supplied to the US, France, Germany and South Asia.

Significance of Medical Device Park

The establishment of a Medical Device Park can provide several benefits to the medical device industry and the overall healthcare ecosystem.

Infrastructure support: The park offers state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities and shared services such as manufacturing facilities, laboratories, testing facilities, logistics, and warehousing facilities, which can help manufacturers reduce their operating costs.

Cost-effective production: The availability of common facilities in the park can help manufacturers to reduce their capital expenditure, as they can share expensive equipment and technology with other manufacturers. This can lead to lower production costs and higher profitability for the companies.

Innovation: The park can help to foster innovation by bringing together different stakeholders in the industry, including manufacturers, researchers and academia, under one roof. This can facilitate collaboration and sharing of ideas, leading to the development of new products and technologies.

Job creation: The establishment of such a park can create employment opportunities, not only in manufacturing but also in areas such as research and development, logistics and quality control. This can have a positive impact on the local economy.

Boost to exports: The park can help increase exports by providing a platform for manufacturers to showcase their products to international buyers. This can help to expand their reach and increase their revenue.
