Uttar Pradesh Government Raises Daily Cow Maintenance Allowance to Support Bovine Welfare Initiatives

The Uttar Pradesh government has raised the daily maintenance allowance for each cow under the Mukhyamantri Sahbhagita Yojana from Rs 30 to Rs 50. This initiative aims to enhance bovine welfare and support individuals adopting stray cattle. The decision was announced after a meeting of the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department, chaired by Minister Dharampal Singh.

According to an official statement, 1,62,625 stray cows have been allocated to 1,05,139 beneficiaries through the Mukhyamantri Sahbhagita scheme. Each family can adopt up to four cows. The government is also considering adding cow and cattle rearing topics to school curriculums. This aims to teach children about the importance of cows and milk.

Focus on Cow Protection and Economic Self-Reliance

The meeting highlighted a detailed plan for cow protection, which includes boosting milk production and promoting the commercial use of cow dung and urine. A strategy has been developed for the economic self-reliance of cow shelters. This involves setting up vermicompost units in partnership with the agriculture department. These units will also produce earthworms for composting.

The state is currently caring for over 12 lakh stray cows in 7,713 shelters. Additionally, the construction of 543 large centres for cow conservation has been approved. The cost per unit has increased from Rs 120 lakh to Rs 160.12 lakh. To enhance safety, radium belts are being fitted on cattle, and CCTV cameras will be installed in shelters using the Cow Conservation Fund.

Integrating Cow Rearing into Education

The government is exploring ways to integrate cow rearing into educational programs. This move aims to instil an understanding of the significance of cows and dairy products among young students. By incorporating these topics into school curriculums, the government hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for livestock management from an early age.

The plan also includes streamlining licensing and marketing processes for organic manure produced by these vermicompost units. This effort is expected to boost the economic viability of cow shelters while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
