Uttar Pradesh Government Defends Action Against Unlicensed Amethi's Sanjay Gandhi Hospital Amidst Allegations of Illegal Surgeries
The Uttar Pradesh government has defended its suspension of the licence for Amethi's Sanjay Gandhi hospital, run by a trust headed by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. The hospital is facing allegations of performing surgeries without a license following the death of a patient due to an alleged overdose of anaesthesia.
The Uttar Pradesh government has defended its stance against the Amethis Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, run by a trust headed by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, for operating without a license. The state government made this revelation to the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday while addressing a petition filed by the hospital challenging the suspension of its license.
License Suspension and Death Allegations

The license of Amethis Sanjay Gandhi Hospital was suspended on September 17 and subsequently sealed following an unfortunate incident where a patient lost her life. The woman had been admitted for what was supposed to be minor surgery but died on September 14. Her husband alleges that she succumbed due to an overdose of anesthesia.
Court Proceedings
The case was heard at the Lucknow Bench of the High Court with Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Manish Kumar presiding over it. They were hearing a writ petition filed by Avadhesh Sharma, Chief Operation Officer (COO) of Amethi's Sanjay Gandhi Hospital who sought details pertaining to the case.
Protests and Demonstrations
In light of these events, there have been protests organized both inside and outside political circles. On Wednesday evening, members of Congress along with other constituents from the INDIA opposition bloc decided to temporarily suspend their dharna or sit-in protest over this issue outside Chief Medical Officer (CMO)'s office. However, employees from within the hospital vowed that they would continue their demonstration until such time as when operations at their facility are allowed to resume.
Government's Standpoint
Despite these demonstrations, however, Uttar Pradesh Government maintains its position regarding operation licenses for medical facilities in order to ensure high standards are maintained across all healthcare institutions in India's most populous state. It is clear that the state government will not tolerate any deviation from these standards, even if it means taking action against a hospital run by a trust headed by a leading political figure.
In conclusion, the incident at Amethi's Sanjay Gandhi Hospital has sparked off a debate on healthcare regulations and their enforcement in India. It highlights the need for maintaining high standards of care across all medical facilities regardless of who operates them. The case also underscores the importance of ensuring that such institutions are held accountable for any lapses in patient safety. While protests continue to rage on both sides, one can only hope that this unfortunate incident will lead to better oversight and stricter adherence to healthcare rules in future.
