UP Government Clears Big Salary Boost for Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Teachers

Under the present system, part-time teachers posted in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas receive 9,961 rupees each month after EPF cuts. Once the increase takes effect, the payable amount will be 17,000 rupees per month. Sixty percent of this salary component comes from the central government, while the remaining forty percent is borne by the state government.

These part-time teachers are appointed under the Samagra Shiksha programme. They are treated at par with instructors, or “anudeshak”, engaged in council-run upper primary schools. Earlier, their pay was matched with those instructors. However, when the honorarium of instructors in Uttar Pradesh moved to 17,000 rupees from April 2026, the Kasturba teachers did not immediately get the same benefit.

The state government in Uttar Pradesh has also revised payments for shiksha mitra and instructors from 1 April 2026. After a proposal was cleared in the Yogi cabinet, shiksha mitra, who were receiving 10,000 rupees, are now entitled to 18,000 rupees per month. This affects a very large workforce in primary schools.

According to official figures, 1,42,929 shiksha mitra are working in primary schools across Uttar Pradesh. In upper primary schools, instructors have been appointed under the Right to Education provisions. Under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan framework, 24,717 part-time instructors are serving on contract in council-run upper primary schools in the state.

Earlier, these instructors were paid 9,000 rupees per month as honorarium. This amount has been lifted to 17,000 rupees. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced the plan to raise the honorarium of shiksha mitra and instructors on 5 September last year, on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, and that announcement is now being implemented.

Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas mainly serve girls from disadvantaged and weaker sections in educationally backward development blocks. These are residential schools that were earlier limited to classes 6 to 8. They are now being upgraded in phases so that teaching facilities extend up to class 12 in every such institution.

Students in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas receive free residential accommodation, food and other basic supplies. In Uttar Pradesh, such residential schools are currently operated in 746 blocks. All these Kasturba Gandhi residential girls’ schools are in the process of being upgraded up to class 12, and the revised salaries are expected to support staff stability during this expansion.
