UP Cabinet Nods to Medical Research Institute and Hospital in Kanpur
In a significant development for healthcare and education in Uttar Pradesh, the state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has greenlit the establishment of the School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT) alongside a 500-bed super-specialty hospital under the auspices of IIT-Kanpur. This decision, reached during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, marks a pivotal step towards enhancing medical research and facilities in Kanpur city.

The initiative comes in response to IIT-Kanpur's agreement to the state government's terms and conditions, alongside the project's funding status and the recognized need for a top-tier medical institute in the region. The Uttar Pradesh government has committed to funding this ambitious project with a single contribution of Rs 50 crore, spread over five years. Starting from the financial year 2024-25, IIT-Kanpur will receive Rs 10 crore annually for five years to support this venture.
Operational expenses for both the SMRT and the accompanying super-specialty hospital will be managed by IIT-Kanpur. Additionally, the governance structure for this initiative will include a member nominated by the Uttar Pradesh government, ensuring state oversight and involvement in its operation and maintenance.
Moreover, under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, this new establishment will offer medical services to economically disadvantaged individuals covered under both the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana. Patients eligible under these schemes will benefit from medical services at predetermined package rates, thereby ensuring accessible healthcare to those in need.
This strategic move not only aims to bolster medical education and research but also to improve healthcare delivery for the population of Kanpur and surrounding areas. By integrating advanced medical facilities with academic excellence, Uttar Pradesh sets a precedent for state-led initiatives in enhancing public health infrastructure.
