Uniform Civil Code Bill To Be Tabled In Uttarakhand Assembly Today

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will table the final draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the Uttarakhand Assembly today. The UCC bill has already got a nod from the Uttarakhand Cabinet and after it is presented and passed in the state assembly, it will be adopted as a new rule.

According to the reports, the Uniform Civil Code advocates a set of state rules that will be equally applicable to all citizens and is not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, among other personal matters.

Uniform Civil Code (UCC)

If the UCC bill gets the mandate in assembly, then Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to adopt the Uniform Civil Code since Independence.

To get the UCC bill approved the hilly state government has called a special session. Ahead of the session, CM Dhami members of the Opposition are welcome to debate on the draft and he thinks that UCC will be "for the good of all sections".

A day ago, after the bill was approved by the state cabinet, CM Dhami said, "In the Cabinet meeting, the proposal to bring the legislation on the Uniform Civil Code in the upcoming Assembly session was passed."

The final draft of the UCC, which comprises around 740 pages in four volumes, was drafted by a five-member panel headed by retired judge of the Supreme Court Ranjana Prakash Desai and was later submitted to Chief Minister Dhami, which is most likely to turn into an act now.
