DSP Humayun Bhat, who had welcomed a new life into his family just 26 days prior, had joined the JKPS as a 2018 batch officer. Tragically, this family endured a loss beyond measure, but Ghulam Hassan Bhat, despite his grief, concealed his tears, setting an example that few fathers could fathom. Undoubtedly burdened by sorrow, his spirit remained unbroken. He upheld the oath he and his son had taken upon entering the police service of the nation.

The fortitude, bravery, determination, and unwavering spirit exhibited by Bhat will resonate within the hallowed halls of every police training institution, college, and academy, inspiring countless future Police officers across the nation. This father has transformed into a living legend, destined to motivate generations of future officers.

Three officers leading from the front

DSP Humayun Bhat had served as the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) in the Kokarnag area of Anantnag district. He was part of a team of security officers who had ventured into the Gadole mountain region in response to intelligence indicating the presence of terrorists. During their initial encounter with the terrorists, SP Humayun Bhat, along with army's Colonel Manpreet Singh, CO of 19 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Aashish Dhonchak, and Dy. SP, came under heavy terrorist fire. These three officers led the operation from the forefront. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated, with helicopters poised for the evacuation of the injured officers. The inhospitable terrain and the element of surprise favored the terrorists.

Para commandos were swiftly mobilised to assist in the evacuation of the injured officers. The focus of the cordoning forces swiftly shifted from eliminating the terrorists to ensuring the safe evacuation of the wounded officers. Braving both terrorist gunfire and the challenging mountainous terrain, the injured officers were successfully evacuated.

Upon learning of the injuries sustained by the officers, DGP Dilbag Singh and ADGP Vijay Kumar rushed to the scene to oversee the operation. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the three officers had lost a substantial amount of blood and could not be revived. They had made the ultimate sacrifice in their unwavering commitment to their duty and the nation.
