BJP Leader Uma Bharti Demands Reservation for OBC Women in New Bill

Uma Bharti, senior BJP leader, has voiced her concern over the absence of a quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC) women in the newly introduced bill that reserves 33% seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. She has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting that half of these reserved seats be allocated to SC/STs and OBCs.

On September 19, in Bhopal, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti expressed disappointment with the recently proposed bill that reserves 33 per cent of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Her concern lies in the absence of a specific quota for women from Other Backward Classes (OBCs). In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bharti demanded that half of the seats within this female quota be reserved specifically for SC/STs and OBCs. She further urged that backward class women from the Muslim community should also receive benefits.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill

The constitutional amendment bill was introduced earlier on Tuesday by the BJP-led Union government in the Lok Sabha. The bill proposes that this reservation will continue for 15 years and there will be one-third quota for women within already existing reservations for SC/STs. This move is aimed at increasing representation of women across all levels of governance.

Bharti's Concern Over Lack Of Reservation For OBC Women

While expressing her happiness over introducing such an empowering provision as reserving seats for women, Uma Bharti couldn't help but feel somewhat dejected due to lack of consideration towards OBC women. "If we do not ensure reservation for OBC women, then their faith in the BJP will be broken," warned Bharti who herself is a prominent OBC leader representing BJP.

Demand For Special Provision Within Women's Quota

In her letter to PM Modi, Bharti emphasized on making special provisions within this new legislation. "The 33 per cent reservation for women in legislature is a special provision", she wrote indicating how it can serve as an opportunity to uplift those sections which have been historically under-represented or marginalized like SC/STs, OBCs and Muslim minority groups.

According to Bharti, such a move would not only ensure the representation of women across all social strata but also help in strengthening their faith in the ruling government. It would demonstrate BJP's commitment towards addressing concerns of all segments of society and furthering inclusive governance.

Conclusion

The introduction of this bill marks a significant step in the direction of gender equality within political spaces. However, as pointed out by Uma Bharti, it is crucial that these steps are taken with a nuanced understanding to ensure fair representation for all sections of society. While the bill is indeed commendable for its intent to increase female participation in politics, it must be formulated keeping in mind India's diverse socio-cultural fabric. Only then can we hope for an equitable distribution of power and opportunities among our citizens.
