UK and Indian Armed Forces Join Forces to Ensure Indo-Pacific Stability

Exercise Tarang Shakti, which began its first phase at Sulur on Tuesday, offers a significant chance for the Royal Air Force (RAF) to collaborate closely with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and other nations in a complex multilateral setting. This exercise aims to enhance interoperability, according to the UK government.

UK-India Forces for Stability

The IAF, RAF, and air forces from Germany, Spain, and France are participating in the initial phase of this maiden multilateral exercise by the IAF. The first phase of Tarang Shakti, the largest multilateral air exercise in India, is taking place at Sulur in Tamil Nadu from August 6-14.

RAF's Participation and Equipment

The RAF contingent has arrived at Sulur Air Force Station in Tamil Nadu with 130 personnel. They have brought six Eurofighter Typhoons, two A330 Voyager air-to-air refuellers, and an A-400M military transport aircraft. The UK government highlighted that this exercise allows the RAF to work closely with the IAF and other nations in a more challenging environment, significantly enhancing interoperability and sharing best practices.

Rafale jets from France, Typhoons from Germany, F-18s from Australia, and F-16s from Greece are among the aircraft participating in this two-phase exercise. The IAF officials mentioned that around 150 aircraft from the IAF and participating countries would be involved across both phases.

Statements from Officials

Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, expressed her congratulations to the IAF for organising its first multilateral air exercise. She said, "I congratulate the Indian Air Force on organising its first multilateral air exercise Tarang Shakti and I am delighted that the Royal Air Force is one of the key participants." She emphasised the importance of cooperation in security and defence across seas, land, and air to maintain stability and enhance prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Group Captain Neil Jones, Air Adviser at the British High Commission, remarked on the significance of Exercise Tarang Shakti. He stated, "Exercise Tarang Shakti adds to a significant milestone in the ongoing relationship between the air forces of our two countries." He noted that training in a multilateral environment provides unique exposure to new challenges and helps integrate tactics and skills across all specialisations.

International Participation

The IAF had earlier announced that 10 foreign countries would participate with their assets while 18 countries would join as observers. This extensive participation underscores the global interest in enhancing military cooperation and readiness through such exercises.

Group Captain Neil Jones also highlighted that for the RAF, this exercise demonstrates their ability to deploy and sustain air operations over long distances while maintaining an effective presence in the Indo-Pacific region. He added that it is a pleasure for them to be part of this collaborative effort with partner nations.

The exercise serves as a platform for sharing best practices among participating nations' air forces. It also aims to improve tactical integration and operational coordination among diverse military assets.

The concluding phase of Exercise Tarang Shakti will continue to build on these collaborative efforts. It will further strengthen ties between participating nations' air forces while enhancing their operational capabilities in a multilateral setting.
