The University Grants Commission (UGC) prescribes the syllabus for the UGC NET exam, which is held twice a year - in June and December. The UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is a national-level examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to determine the eligibility of candidates for the roles of Assistant Professor or both Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges. The exam is divided into two papers:

Paper 1: A General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude, compulsory for all candidates.
Paper 2: A subject-specific paper, depending on the field the candidate has chosen.

This year, the UGC NET exam will be held from January 3 to 16, 2025. The syllabus for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 has been revised in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, so candidates must thoroughly familiarise themselves with the updated syllabus to prepare effectively.

UGC NET Syllabus 2024: Paper 1 (General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude)

Paper 1 is compulsory for all candidates and is designed to test the general teaching and research aptitude of candidates. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, each carrying 2 marks. The total weightage for Paper 1 is 100 marks. The syllabus for Paper 1 includes the following topics:

  • Teaching Aptitude: The principles of teaching, teaching methods, strategies, and evaluation.
  • Research Aptitude: Research methods, research ethics, and the process of writing research papers.
  • Comprehension: Reading comprehension skills, with questions based on passages.
  • Communication: Communication techniques, verbal and non-verbal communication, barriers to communication.
  • Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude: Basic mathematical concepts and reasoning.
  • Logical Reasoning: Analytical reasoning, argument development, logical decision-making.
  • Data Interpretation: Understanding and analysing data presented in graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Basic ICT concepts, usage of computers, software tools.
  • People, Development and Environment: Environmental issues, sustainable development, and human development.
  • Higher Education System: Structure of higher education in India, governance, funding, and policies.

UGC NET Syllabus 2024: Paper 2 (Subject-Specific Paper)

Paper 2 is based on the subject chosen by the candidate. Candidates must select the subject in which they have completed their Master's degree. If their subject is not available, they must choose a related subject. The syllabus for Paper 2 includes 100 multiple-choice questions, each carrying 2 marks. The total weightage for Paper 2 is 200 marks. The syllabus for each subject is extensive and prescribed by the exam conducting authority.
