Two Routes Discontinued

Indian Railways announced on Wednesday that two Vande Bharat routes will be discontinued, while simultaneously unveiling a new service linking Rajasthan and Gujarat. The newly introduced train will operate six days a week between Udaipur and Asarva, near Ahmedabad. This development follows closely on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging off India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, connecting Howrah to Kamakhya in Guwahati.

Since its debut in 2019, the fleet of high-speed premium trains has expanded rapidly, with more than 160 services expected to be operational by December 2025. A recent PIB update revealed ambitious targets: scaling up to 800 trains by 2030 and 4,500 by 2047.

The Railway Ministry has also outlined plans for Vande Bharat 4.0, the next-generation model designed to set new global benchmarks in speed, comfort, and build quality. Enhancements will include upgraded seating, modernized toilets, refined coach craftsmanship, and improved interior finishes. Crucially, the trains will integrate Kavach 5.0, the latest version of India's indigenous Automatic Train Protection system, strengthening safety and technology standards. The rollout of Vande Bharat 4.0 is expected within 18 months from late 2025.
