Two Suspects Apprehended in Narcotics Case near Nepal Border
In an operation that marked a significant breakthrough in a narcotics case, the Pune police apprehended two suspects on Tuesday. The arrest was made possible through a joint operation with the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh, near the Nepal border in northern India. One of the suspects was identified as Bhushan Patel, brother of Lalit Patil who is currently an inmate at Yerawada Jail but fled from Sassoon General Hospital last week while undergoing treatment. The second suspect nabbed by the police is Abhishek Balkawade.
The Narcotics Case

On September 30th, city police had arrested an individual outside Sassoon General Hospital who was found to be carrying mephedrone worth Rs 2 crore. A subsequent investigation led to another arrest; this time a hospital canteen staffer who divulged that the contraband had been supplied by Lalit Patil. At that time, Patil was also admitted in Sassoon General Hospital as an inmate from Yerwada Jail.
However, on October 2nd when he was taken for an X-ray examination within the premises of the hospital, Lalit managed to escape custody which resulted in nine police personnel being suspended for negligence and dereliction of duty. This event highlighted serious lapses in security measures and prompted a manhunt for both Lalit and his accomplices.
The Arrests
Bhushan Patel and Abhishek Balkawade were wanted in connection with this mephedrone seizure case since they were believed to be part of this illicit drug trade network spearheaded by Lalit Patil. On Tuesday October 10th , both these accused were finally apprehended near Nepal border courtesy of combined efforts from Pune crime branch and UP's STF.
An official stated: "Today, the Pune crime branch and the UP police's STF apprehended both the accused from near Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh." This development is a significant step forward in cracking down on this narcotics network.
Continuing Investigation
Meanwhile, Lalit Patil remains at large. His escape from Sassoon General Hospital has triggered an intensive manhunt by various law enforcement agencies. The investigation into this case continues as authorities work to dismantle this drug trafficking operation and bring all involved parties to justice.
In conclusion, these arrests illustrate that inter-state cooperation among law enforcement agencies can yield positive results in combating drug trafficking networks that span across states and even international borders. However, it also underscores the need for stringent security measures within correctional facilities and hospitals where inmates are admitted for treatment to prevent such breaches of custody in future.
